Our first store south of Trenton is very close -- just about a mile and a half southeast -- of our southernmost Trenton stop at the Supreme Food Market. We're on South Broad Street to the southeast of downtown Trenton in Hamilton, what might be considered a downtown of the sprawling township with multiple smaller business districts such as Hamilton Square and Mercerville. This 11,000 square foot store was built as a 1960s simple centennial A&P, and it's just up the street from a former SuperFresh. So this was converted to SuperFresh in 1983 and then moved later, right? Nope. This store actually closed by the late 1970s while the later SuperFresh was originally a department store, then became Foodtown from 1989-1999 when it switched to SuperFresh. Also in that mall is a current Save-A-Lot. Tomorrow, we move to the eastern border of Hamilton Township for a tour at the township's second ShopRite. Check it out tomorrow on The Market Report!

  1. This supermarket opened no later than August 22, 1947, as it was listed among A&P's locations in an advertisement that appeared in that day's edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Based on historic aerial views, it appears that the Centennial front was added sometime between 1958 and 1963. The last mention of this store in an A&P ad (that I could find) was on October 22, 1972, so I'm guessing that it closed very shortly thereafter.

Before I conclude, I just wanted to note that A&P's newspaper advertisements stated this store's address was 2110 S. Broad St.

    1. Zachary, you are very welcome.

I want to apologize if I came across as a smart aleck when I mentioned the address of the store as identified in A&P's newspaper advertisements. That was certainly not my intention, given the minor difference between 2110 vs. 2130 South Broad Street. I merely mentioned the 2110 South Broad Street address as a piece of information that might come in handy if anyone wanted to do further research about this A&P.

  2. Is (or rather was) that first later tenant an independent, or did a chain from elsewhere somehow wind up with a store in NJ (seems odd, but then again...)?

  3. OK, that's the chain I was thinking of (Jewel, more midwestern based), just never heard of them having anything this far east (though, based on your notes it looks to be a small group).

    1. Well, I have no idea what the scope of their NJ/PA area store base was. I only listed those that I know off the top of my head. Not sure what the rest of their stores looked like.
