This former centennial A&P is located just up the street from yesterday's ShopRite, though I would imagine the ShopRite dates to at least 10 years after the A&P (mid-70s at the earliest). Perhaps the ShopRite forced the A&P out of business, or maybe the A&P closed before the ShopRite opened.
Either way, I'm pretty sure that the original A&P sign post still stands, although I do think the sign frame at the top has been replaced. We have one more store in Yonkers before we move on, which we'll see tomorrow on The Market Report!

  1. Hi. That was an A&P. Mom shopped there when I was very young. I remember a huge square hole in the middle of the store where they moved boxes and crates from the basement on a conveyer belt. It closed around 1973/5ish and became a Jack LaLanne.

There was a Daitch Shopwell around the corner on Central Park Ave that closed around the same time and became a post office.

Between the Shop Rite (still there) on Tuckahoe and the A&P, there was a Finast from 73 until sometime in the 80s (?) when it became a Staples.

Shop Rite was built sometime in the 80s (?) and replaced the other three though the A&P and Shopwell were already gone.

    Hope this helps. 😊

    1. Thanks for the history here!

    2. The A&P on Tuckahoe Road closed around August 1974. Shoprite opened in early August 1984. Finast was there before 1970 and closed literally about a week before Shoprite opened. Daitch Shopwell likely closed in the late 60's. I have lived in northeast Yonkers my entire life.
