Our first stop is the neighborhood of Spuyten Duyvil, which is across Spuyten Duyvil Creek from Inwood, Manhattan. This is a building that really looks like a former supermarket, especially from the back. It's about 6,000 square feet, and anchors a very small strip mall which makes up really the only commercial section in this small residential neighborhood. And although this is no longer a grocery store, there is a tiny grocery store just to the left (in fact, you can see its awning to the far left in the above picture). We'll be touring that tomorrow on The Independent Edition!

  1. Eckerd is pretty definite by those signs (they used those "pill shaped" signs many places, and Rite Aid just replaced the front when they took over).

  2. I believe this store was a Gristede's at one point many years ago. Gristede's/Red Apple sold/sublet many stores to Rite aid over the years.

    1. Oh, good point, that would make a lot of sense. Thanks!

    2. Gristedes was first in 1959. Followed by C-Town. Then three different pharmacies took over. Be nice to see a full-fledged grocery store again, but the rent is sky high. Not likely.

    3. Or basically, one pharmacy (if it was as originally listed, since Genovese was bought by Eckerd, who was then bought by Rite Aid).

As opposed to, say, here where a Rite Aid closed up, and then CVS moved into that building.
