1200 Park St, Hartford, CT

Original Grocery Tenant:  Stop & Shop Address:  1200 Park St, Frog Hollow, Hartford, CT Opened:  1968 Closed:  after 1985 Later Tenants:  subdivided Photographed:  July 9, 2023 What's today the IKASA Furniture & Mattress store and a neighboring Dollar Tree was previously a Home Mart (...where you are the star!) but originally, back in 1968, opened as a 25,000 square foot Stop & Shop with a Bradlees next door. After Stop & Shop closed -- at some point after 1985 -- Save-A-Lot opened up in the space to the right of the former supermarket, taking up around 15,000 square feet. But by 2011, the Save-A-Lot moved a few doors over and 10,000 square feet up in size, then closing in 2020. That space is now a Key Food . Tomorrow we're off to East Hartford to check out another former supermarket right here on Grocery Archaeology!

107 Jersey Ave, Port Jervis, NY

Original Grocery Tenant: A&P Address: 107 Jersey Ave, Port Jervis, NY Opened:  between 1957 and 1963 Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Subdivided - Save-A-Lot > Port Jervis Marketplace > non-grocery tenants Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Port Jervis these days has only one supermarket, a Save-A-Lot in a strip mall downtown. We'll check out that store tomorrow, but here's a look at another former supermarket just down the street from yesterday's . This 15,800 square foot A&P Centennial was expanded later to its present 25,000 square feet, but I'm not sure whether A&P did the expansion or not because I'm not clear on when the A&P closed. We do know, though, that it opened between 1957 and 1963 based on aerials. I also unfortunately don't know what occupied the space when A&P closed, but it later was subdivided with Save-A-Lot taking the largest spot. Save-A-Lot closed in 2008 but later reopened, then closed again between 2015 and 2018....

7495 Westbranch Hwy, Lewisburg, PA

Original Grocery Tenant:  ACME Markets Address: 7495 Westbranch Hwy, Lewisburg, PA Opened:  late 1970s Closed:  1995 Later Tenants:  Bi-Lo (1995-1998) > Save-A-Lot (1998-ca. 2014) Photographed:  August 19, 2022 Today's snapshot is a quick look at a former ACME, later Bi-Lo and then a Save-A-Lot owned by Weis, which has a store just south of here. Eventually Weis sold the store back to Save-A-Lot, and then it closed around 2014. Although the building was extensively renovated, the original structure is still standing. There's another new grocery store just north of here, which we'll be taking a look at tomorrow on The Market Report !

3949 US-130, Pennsauken, NJ

Original Tenant: Penn Fruit Address: 3949 US-130, Pennsauken, NJ Opened:  1950s Closed:  1970s Later Tenants:  Jewel T > subdivided Photographed:  January 2021 This unnamed strip mall at US-130 and Federal Street in Pennsauken is constructed around a roughly 16,000 square foot arched-roof Penn Fruit, which was later expanded to about 31,000 square feet. That became a Jewel T discount food store, and was later subdivided with Family Dollar taking the left side and part of the Save-A-Lot in the right side. The rest of the Save-A-Lot may have been a bank or other smaller business next to the supermarket. An overview of the whole strip mall from a conveniently-placed pedestrian walkway over route 130. You see how there's a raised section in the middle of Family Dollar's ceiling? I couldn't quite figure out what that is when I was in the store, but I think it's in the middle of the arch where the building roof is higher. The rest of the ceiling is much lower, as we ...

7183 NY-54, Bath, NY

Original Tenant:  Deal's Super Duper Address:  7183 NY-54, Bath, NY Opened:  1979 Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Save-A-Lot (??-2012) > Clark Specialty Co. (2012-2019) Photographed:  August 2020 Route 54 is the main road along Keuka Lake's east side, with 54A going up the west side. 54 goes from Bath to Penn Yan, where it turns east and heads out to Dresden on Seneca Lake. This store is located north of Bath on 54 between Bath and Hammondsport. It's unclear whether this store's original tenant, Deal's Super Duper, had any relation to the other assorted Super Duper supermarkets in the NY-PA area. I know there were several, but I believe the only one still operating is Dave's Super Duper in Honesdale, PA. It was later taken over by Save-A-Lot, which drpep captured here in 2009. In 2012, Save-A-Lot moved to the former P&C Foods to the south of Bath  and this 18,000 square foot store was taken over by Clark Specialty Co. , ...

1250 Park St, Hartford, CT

Original Tenant:  unknown Address:  1250 Park St, Parkville, Hartford, CT Opened:  unknown Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  Save-A-Lot > Supermarket Coming Soon Photographed:  August 2020 Contributor:  Lars D. Our final Hartford store is a quick look at this former Save-A-Lot just up the street from the CTown which has closed and is now being prepared for the opening of an independent supermarket. The windows are fully papered over, so we unfortunately can't get a look inside. But the Save-A-Lot decals remain in the windows... ...but what we can find is a remaining cart corral... That wraps up our look at Hartford! Come back tomorrow to The Market Report for three stores in the eastern suburbs! UPDATE 10/29/20:  This is expected to open as a Key Food on 11/4/20.
